Spot Rare Birds in Marlborough Sounds

The region is a birdwatchers dream, with many rare and endemic species inhabiting the peaceful and undisturbed rocky outcrops, islands and prime roosting trees.

With such an abundance of wildlife, no two Marlborough Sounds cruises are ever the same. You may serenely sit and observe the incredible landscape and wildlife as we cruise along the shimmering waterways of Marlborough Sounds which, owing to the area’s extremely convoluted formation, constitute 1/5 of the total length of New Zealand’s coastline.

We pride ourselves on our exceptionally high success rate in spotting rare and critically endangered birds like the New Zealand King Shag and the Orange Fronted Kakariki. You can spot the King Shag on the way to Blumine Island, a paradise for bird watchers. And we’re proud sponsors of the birds on Blumine Island. We introduced 54 Orange Fronted Kakariki's to the island, and six generations later, they've not only adapted but thrived in their new home. These birds are a testament to our commitment to conservation. Please note that you might get wet feet when jumping onto Blumine Island as there's no jetty or pier. But trust us, the experience is worth it!

We have a secret method for successful bird spotting, and we're excited to share it with you. You'll leave our wildlife eco tours with newfound skills that will enhance your bird-watching adventures in the future. And on your way back to Picton, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and other fascinating wildlife. The surprises continue even after you leave the island!

Our tours depart from Picton's main waterfront, a very short walk from the main street. Plus, there's parking available for your convenience and we have refreshments available on board too for unforgettable Picton shore excursions.
